I should have known it was too good to be true. It was all a trick. Jerry Angelo got me to thinking he actually knew what he was doing. After drafting Gabe Carimi and Stephen Paea with their first and second round pick he decided to annoy me in the third round.

I was even getting ready for some random player just assuming it wouldn't be the guy I wanted. I was really hoping that Shareece Wright out of USC was going to fall to the Bears at 93 but the Chargers grabbed him a few picks ahead of the Bears. So then I'm scrolling through the best available list and I come across the guy. The perfect Jerry Angelo pick......

Wide receiver Edmond Gates from Abilene Christian. Right? Come on doesn't Jerry have to take someone from a small Texas school every year.

But no the Bears decided to reach for Chris Conte, a safety from the University of California. You wanna know why I really think this is a bad draft pick?

I can not find a single real highlight of his guy anywhere.

Conte to me might seem like a poor mans version of Adam Archuleta. He had the best broad jump of any the defense backs at the NFL combine with 127 inches. He also had a decent vertical at 35.5 inches. His 40 yard dash is ok at 4.52 and he has good size for a safety at 6'2" but his 3 cone and 20 yard shuttle were poor.

This guy wasn't a starter till his senior year. For the first three seasons of his college career he was a corner and then he moved to safety his season year. Does this guy seem like a 5 round pick or later?

The Bears defensive back coach Jon Hoke is close with Conte's defensive coordinator at Cal, Clancey Pendergast.

"Jon talked to Clancey [about Conte], and Clancey had nothing but really good things to say," Angelo said. "We really liked this player. He's a pure free safety. He's got size and speed. [It's] very, very hard to find a free safety. That safety position has got great value. We just felt his value was too good to pass up."

I guess they assume they will be losing Daniele Manning in free agency and expect Conte to be the third safety with Major Wright and Chris Harris.

Hopefully this draft pick isn't the return of old Jerry with the 5th and 6th pick because I really did like the first two picks. I guess we will just have to see.

I was giving the Bears a B+ but that has now dropped to a B because I really feel this was a big reach. Seriously search him on youtube and all you will find is a 8 second clip of him recovering a fumble but if you blink you miss it.
