Bears sign CFL Receiver
For the last two seasons quarterback Jay Cutler has asked for a receiver who can go up and get it. Well it might not be Plaxico or Vincent Jackson but the Bears newest receiver can definitely go up and get it.
On Friday the Chicago Bears agreed to a two year reserve/future contract with CFL receiver Andy Fantuz. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
Fantuz, 27, is 6'4, 220 lbs was the third overall pick in the 2006 CFL draft has played the last 5 seasons up in Canada. He has caught 276 passes for 4,136 yards and 23 touchdowns during those five years. This past season he caught 87 balls for 1,380 yards with six touchdowns.
Take this for what it is worth but Fantuz might be the TO or Chad Johnson of the CFL. He is all over Twitter and Youtube, even posting video diaries after each of his NFL tryouts. He also has his own website, www.andyfantuz.com
Unlike maybe guys who play in the CFL who head to the NFL, Fantuz is actually from Canada. He grew up North of the border and even played his college ball in Canada.
I really hope he doesn't become the next Mike Hass as a practice and training camp player that never gets a chance from the coaching staff. He might remind Mike Martz of Drew Bennett who played for him while he was coach of the Rams.
This signing might mean nothing and we may never even see Fantuz in a Bears uniform or maybe he could be the next Marcus Robinson who explodes on the scene. Or more likely he could be something in between and at least provide Jay Cutler a big target in the red zone.
