Chicago Bears release Five maybe Six
On Monday the Chicago Bears cut five players that brought them down to the maximum 80 players they are allowed to have entering the 4th preseason week. The number was raised from 80 to 90 due to the lockout but now they have till Saturday to make it to the final 53.
There was no real surprise in this round of cuts as they released DT Tank Tyler, QB Trevor Vittatoe, C J.C, Brigone and LB Tanner Antle. The only name that got cut was draft bust Vernon Gholston who was unable to take advantage of an injury to Corey Wootton to impress the coaching staff. My guess is the Raiders are Gholston's last chance to try and salvage his NFL career because isn't that the place everyone goes for one last chance.
The real question is was running back Chester Taylor released or no? Taylor who sounded like a guy who was talking his way out of town Saturday night after not playing in the preseason game against the Titans. According to Taylor he had talked to head coach Lovie Smith who told him he was released. However general manager Jerry Angelo said that was not the case and said that Chester misunderstood.
I believe it is clear to everyone that Chester Taylor will not be on the Bears opening roster. He has only carried the ball a handful of times this preseason while Forte, Bell & Barber have all had over 20 carries each so far. My guess is Lovie did say he was cut or going to be cut but Jerry is hoping to make a trade and get something for Chester. Interestingly Chester was not at Halas Hall for practice on Monday.
Last offseason Taylor was signed and expected to come in with fresh legs and puch Matt Forte who was coming off a subpar sophomore season. It may have motivated Forte but Taylor looked much older then expected running for only 267 yards and averaging 2.4 yards per carry. Once Taylor is officially released it will mean 2 of the 3 big free agent signings from last offseason are no longer on the team. We all know Julius Peppers isn't going anywhere but the Mike Martz suggested pickups of Chester Taylor and Brandon Manumaleuna. Wonder if Roy Williams will be next?
