Do the McCaskey's have a Rocky?
Oh Happy day. I'm on such a Bears rush now that not only did I do a show on today's big news but I'm also writing an article and then throw this on top of the Bears schedule being released last night and the road trip being planned very quickly.
Today Michael McCaskey has retired from his chairman of the board spot once the 2010 football season is over which will probably be Monday, January 3, 2011. He will be replaced by George McCaskey who has been the senior director of ticket sales since 1991 and a member of the board since 2004.
Michael who is the oldest grandson of Papa Bear George Halas. Mikey took over the president of the team role once his grandfather passed away in 1983. The boy born with the silver spoon in his mouth fought with Da coach Mike Ditka several times before finally firing him in 1992. Anyone wonder what would have happened if he hadn't given Ditka an extension back in '84?
Michael is also responsible for disbanding the Honey Bears. Seriously no cheerleaders? This is football not baseball.
But the best and by best I mean most embarrassing move was how he screwed up the hiring of Dave McGinnis. After McGinnis interviewed for the vacant head coaching job, Michael started arranging for a new conference the following day which then caused the local and national media to announce that Dave was going to be the 11th head coach is Bears history.
This came as a shock to McGinnis who had yet to discuss contract issues. This lead to Dave withdrawing himself from the coaching search.
Due to the embarrassment Michael was forced to step down from his President/CEO spot and became just the chairman of the board. Ted Philips was promoted to replace McCaskey, with the main goal of working with the city to remodel Soldier Field.
Will Michael now being replace by George really change anything? I don't know but it sure as hell can't hurt. No one expected Rocky Wirtz to do anything for the Hawks but look at what he has done in two short seasons.
First order of business bring back the Honey Bears.
Second fire Lovie and Jerry and maybe Ted and finally hire a football person to run the team.
If George can accomplish both of those it will go a long way into reshaping this organization and put it heading in the right direction.
