Niemi and the Hawks take on Broduer and the Devils in New Jersey in possible Finals preview
Welcome to playoff hockey hockey fans and maybe a Stanley Cup finals preview.
The Devils got on the board quickly with Ilya Kovalchuk scoring his 40th goal of the season just 5:49 into the game. After that we saw over 50 minutes of shutout hockey. With just 24 seconds left in the game Kris Versteeg was able to slip one past Marty Brodeur which sent the game to overtime.
Antti Niemi was excellent after coming off his shutout of the Wild two nights ago. He stopped 29 shots during regulation and made several fantastic saves in overtime. How anyone doubted him being the number 1 goalie is beyond me.
After a scoreless overtime we needed to the shoot out, with Coach Q sticking to his usual stable of Toews and Kane to start things off. Toews was able to score on his first attempt and that is all that was needed with Neimi shutting down the Devils on their 3 attempts.
The win was the 48 of the season and gives the Hawks 103 points on the year which is good enough for second place only 1 point behind San Jose
Fun fact of the night was this was the first game in the NHL since 2001 that did not have a penalty, 65 minutes of clean hockey.
